Come out and see Shohini Ghosh’s distinctively unique copper murals that are featured this month with a reception Friday, April 1.  We also welcome new GW Artist Jeff Velarde.  This month your purchases at Great Western Art Gallery, not only support local and regional artists, but also support relief efforts in Japan. GW will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Red Cross.

April Featured Artist: Shohini Ghosh – Copper Muralist
Friday, April 1 from 6 – 9 p.m.
Shohini is one of the few Indian women sculptors in the world. Her body of work comprises public art commissions, collectible contemporary bronze sculptures and distinctively unique copper murals. Her artwork and commissions are placed with collectors all over the world. Copper Murals: Shohini has developed a unique art form in her copper murals, sized from a single painting to a large 16 piece ensemble of smaller framed pieces to make a large, dynamic mural. She uses chemical patinas to color copper plates with embellishments of gold and silver leaf to create earthy, warm, international cityscapes that are genuinely collectable.

New GW Artists: Jeff Velarde – Oil Painter
My work is devoted to telling the story of everyday life in urban settings around the world. I seek to capture moods and feelings in the settings and to take the viewer into that environment. When I am painting figures in these settings I try imagining what these characters are and what their story is. I come to my own conclusions about these people and  try to convey what I think they are feeling. The end result that I shoot for is pleasing to the eye for its use of color, composition, and subject matter, but also something that transports the viewer to another environment and an interesting view into the human condition. Jeff’s works of art are highly detailed large canvas paintings inspired by his travels around the world.
